Previously Published in the anthology, Kissing the Highlander, Heart of Stone is a Highland Talents prequel. In it, you’ll get a glimpse of young Donal MacNabb. You’ll see him as man to be reckoned with in Highland Healer. Better yet, he gets his own romance and adventure in Highland Seer.
My Highland Talents stories are set in the years following what has been called the worst defeat Scotland suffered at the hands of the English. Despite having established diplomatic relations with England and having married Henry VIII’s sister, Margaret Tudor, James IV was forced to honor the Auld Alliance when France went to war with England. He died in battle at Flodden Field in 1513 along with most of his nobles, clan chiefs and their heirs. For years, Scotland was ruled by Regents and fell into chaos.
Heart of Stone takes place in happier times, 11 years before that tragedy. A patron of education and the arts, James IV was Scotland’s Renaissance king. In 1496, he made education compulsory for the upper classes, which leads Donal’s older brother, Gavan MacNabb to St. Andrews and beyond, before his journey home in Heart of Stone.
Bound home after two years away, Gavan MacNabb comes across a lass and her deerhound in a moonlit circle of standing stones. Little does he know that the garland of bluebells she weaves and the spell she sings will change the course of his life.
Marsali Murray doesn’t really believe the old wives’ tale that making a chain of bluebells by the standing stones under a waxing moon will bring true love, but she’s desperate to try anything to escape the boring, everlasting sameness of her life. Anything except marrying a man her father chooses for her. When her deerhound, Corrie, insists on following Gavan, Marsali decides that’s the excuse she needs to have the adventure she craves. She’ll go where he goes, whether he is the man promised by her spell—or not.
Gavan has already seen much of the world denied to Marsali. He’s ready to settle down. She is eager to spread her wings. Can they find what they need with each other?
